A Government Conspiracy?
Needless to say, I face an uphill battle decluttering and organizing my life. There are many pitfalls ahead, but I am now faced with a problem that I didn't expect.
Taking inventory of the things that I want to get rid of, I've come across a few pieces of electronics equipment. So far, I have a computer, monitor, printer, and scanner that I'm looking to offload. Now most of this equipment, excluding the monitor, is ancient. The computer is 400 MHz and the printer is one step above a dot matrix. They're not worth selling, so I thought why not just throw them out.
I thought I read somewhere that throwing out electronics equipment was not a good idea. I consider myself environmentally friendly, so I decided to check it out. It was a good thing I did.
I found this article regarding the hazards of putting electronics out to the curb for trash. To make a long story short, the heavy metals (among other elements) in computers are hazardous to the environment. Also alarming was the fact that 40% of the heavy metals found in landfills come from electronic component throwaways. With technology rapidly changing, and components quickly becoming obsolete, I'm sure landfills are saturated with electronics. The article also mentions that less than 10% of computers today are being recycled.
So okay, I decide to recycle the computer components. But I find out that the county only sponsors two electronics recycling events per year! Luckily, I only have to wait until March 25th. If I miss that, I have to wait until October!
My question is, why do I have to wait so long to rid myself of these things? Why is the government preventing me from removing clutter in an expedient manner? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the government sponsers these events, but why so few and far between? If anyone can shed light on this, drop me a line.
Meanwhile, I wait...
